Have you heard such as Avian Flu, Canine Flu, Novel H1N1, Pandemic Flu, Seasonal Flu and Swine Flu.

Influenza A viruses have infected many different animals, including ducks, chickens, pigs, whales, horses, and seals. However, certain subtypes of influenza A virus are specific to certain species, except for birds, which are hosts to all known subtypes of influenza A. Subtypes that have caused widespread illness in people either in the past or currently are H3N2, H2N2, H1N1, and H1N2. H1N1 and H3N2 subtypes also have caused outbreaks in pigs, and H7N7 and H3N8 viruses have caused outbreaks in horses.

Influenza A viruses normally seen in one species sometimes can cross over and cause illness in another species. For example, until 1998, only H1N1 viruses circulated widely in the U.S. pig population. However, in 1998, H3N2 viruses from humans were introduced into the pig population and caused widespread disease among pigs. Most recently, H3N8 viruses from horses have crossed over and caused outbreaks in dogs.

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization Avian Influenza Disease Emergency Situation Update, H5N1 pathogenicity is continuing to gradually rise in endemic areas but the avian influenza disease situation in farmed birds is being held in check by vaccination. Eleven outbreaks of H5N1 were reported worldwide in June 2008 in five countries (China, Egypt, Indonesia, Pakistan and Vietnam) compared to 65 outbreaks in June 2006 and 55 in June 2007. The "global HPAI situation can be said to have improved markedly in the first half of 2008 [but] cases of HPAI are still underestimated and underreported in many countries because of limitations in country disease surveillance systems

India - H1N1 starting to spread in India

Lack of preparedness, no uniform response make virus a big threat.

One problem for health official is the paucity of testing centres.

For Instance Chenai, India fifth largest city, reportly has just ONE clinc with proper facilities.

New Delhi has 14, or about one for every million people.

Parents are anxious and wanted to avoid any panic. Given the current magnitude of the spread of the infection and the fact that the current virs is fairly mild, closure of educational institution on account of any student or staff member falling ill with flu-like symtoms is not recommended-said the Indian Ministry advised.

Malaysia - 6 New Death push up Malaysia Toll

The number of infection has also spiralled to 2253 after 270 new cases were confirmed since Monday- Health Ministry Director.

Singapore - Six more H1N1 patients were admitted to intensive care units (ICU) on Tuesday.

The oldest is a 69-year-old man with a medical history of hypertension and renal failure and the youngest, a 9-year-old boy with a medical history of epilepsy and blood disorder Thalassemia Minor.
There are currently 75 patients hospitalised with H1N1 infection - nine of them are in ICUs.
